Honesty in personal relationship
Topic
People help us become aware of ourselves, while inner awakenings open our eyes to others. The inner and interpersonal realms constantly influence one another. However, transferring my inner experiences into my relationships is a choice, not an automatic process. I decide what to share with my partner and what to keep private, which is where truthfulness becomes a matter of choice.
Yet, my inner world will inevitably impact my partner, whether I choose to share it or not. This creates an ethical dilemma regarding honesty in personal relationships.
Three distortion of truth (at least) are possible here. The first 2 depend on self awareness and boundaries while the 3rd one is a moral challenge for honesty:
- projecting into the other the cause of a problem which is my own responsibility
- taking in as my responsibility a problem which is not mine
- knowingly withholding, distorting or covering up aspects of my inner reality which do effect my partner.
